GAC KDF cartridge (PurePro UDF, 10″ × 2.5″) removes chlorine, heavy metals and iron and improves taste. Replace after 5,800 litres or every 6 months.

coconut activated carbon and KDF® media for chlorine, heavy metals and iron
The GAC KDF cartridge combines two media in one cartridge: granular activated carbon from coconut shell (GAC) and KDF® media. The carbon removes chlorine and substances that spoil the taste and odour of water. According to the manufacturer, KDF additionally reduces heavy metals, lead and iron. The product is a PurePro UDF cartridge, size 10″ × 2.5″, with a nominal rating of 1 micron.
The cartridge is designed for under-sink filters, kitchen water systems and reverse osmosis systems. Use it as a pre-filter or as the final stage; with reverse osmosis, use it together with a sediment cartridge that protects the membrane from particles. It suits households, catering, and commercial and industrial use, including taps, water coolers and coffee machines.
How does it work and where does it sit in the filtration chain?
Water flows through a layer of granular carbon and KDF® media. Chlorine and organic substances bind to the carbon (adsorption), while KDF® is a copper-zinc alloy that converts chlorine and reduces heavy metals through a redox reaction. According to the manufacturer the media is bacteriostatic, which means it limits bacterial growth inside the cartridge. According to the manufacturer, the cartridge does not release carbon particles into the water.
Granular carbon (GAC) differs from a carbon block (CTO carbon block 5 micron) in its structure, but the purpose is similar. The GAC KDF cartridge has the advantage for water that contains heavy metals or iron. The cartridge does not remove dissolved salts and is not intended for disinfecting water.
Where to install it and what to use with it
Install the GAC KDF cartridge after the sediment cartridge. If the water carries a lot of particles, install a 5 micron sediment cartridge or 1 micron first. You can use it as the carbon stage or alongside a carbon block.

For whole-house filters with a Big Blue housing, where the cartridge diameter is 4½″, see the GAC + KDF activated carbon filter 10BB. You will find other cartridges in the category individual cartridges for water filters.
When to replace the cartridge
Replace the cartridge after 5,800 litres of water or every 6 months, whichever comes first, depending on water quality. After that period the cartridge no longer retains chlorine and metals sufficiently. Before replacing, shut off the water supply, and afterwards flush the system for a few minutes according to the system manufacturer’s instructions. In reverse osmosis systems it makes sense to replace the cartridges at the same time.
If you are looking for a GAC KDF cartridge to remove chlorine, heavy metals and iron, the PurePro UDF 10″ × 2.5″ cartridge is a simple and affordable choice. Also see our other water filters and reverse osmosis water filters.
